Retessellating the grid(games)

May 14th, 2022 by David

We all have been indoctrinated into a rectilinear simplicity. Because of gravity on earth the 4.4.4.4 tessellation of four squares filling the plane has been dominate, perhaps dominant isnt strong enough a word, omnipresent perhaps is more like it. We think in squares. It’s the easiest for everything and so we arrange everything into it’s confines. For instance, a 6 pack of cans should be a 7 pack with the circular cans being as close to each other as possile in a hexagonal type position. It would save space. But, like metric, it is too hard to easily achieve. The metric system is better, so is hunimal, but changing our system of measurements and numbers simply isn’t easy. This is where my heart goes out to our team here. Anton, who is to thank for everything, including this blog!, and our new team member Adam have a huge task in front of them. We muust decorate and program a retessellation of our society and we will start with Royal Match. Royal Match is a trivial game where you burst blocks, but it can be rennovated into any tessellation and even MSPs! So, our goal, at least my goal, and Adam and Anton are indulgent with me, is to generalize royal match to any tessellation! I’m excited by this, but there are hurdles. The gravity of the content of the boxes refilling for regular polygonal tessellations will be tricky in some multiple vertex type tessellations and visually (this is Adam’s sphere as our illustrating manager (of another of his friends too) ) this will require an overhaul of the whole system. Each tessellation has polyominoes that look different from any other. Ideally we get it as visually ppleasing as Royal Match, which we are goiing to use as a template! There’s just so much work to do, so I want to ask other programmers and artists to join the team. We don’t bite, and this all can make sense to you if you give it time and communicate with us.
