Why I’m changing my name to Craz(y)…

February 26th, 2021 by David

I believe in name freedom, the right of every person to unilaterally change their name at anytime for any reason. I also submit myself as a public servant, seeking to improve matters in my culture and society. I feel like everything must change because I look at this oppressed confused impoverished world and I can imagine a better one with ease. You can probably do the same, but that creativity is muted because change can seem irrational and arbitrary. It can seem insane to change something unless it is highly organized in advance, yet fluid change is what I see this world in need of. I particularly feel bad for those imprisoned or destitute. So, I seek to change my middle name to Fuck The Drug War. To do so is crazy. But I object to the title crazy. It is sanist, it is limiting it is disrespectful and it must be addressed bye the united force of the underdogs. We have to have permission to occasionally make no sense. We must all drive ourselves crazy until this world is more equitable and safe. We do this for friends and family and everyone everywhere, but the why of it is silent. I will try to fix this world primarily using language and I will make myself an agent of change by choosing this offensive c-word as a first name. I will also have an offensive last name. I do this to get us beyond language and so that we know the urgency of our need for change and also the profundity of change that is called for.

I also am very lucky to be able to raise my voice and I am willing to take a hit. My name change will reduce the value of my name greatly, but I will undergo that in service of a better world. When you see my Craz(y) name, go wild, seek productive change and progress and insist on fairness and equity! That is the reason, but the (y) is silent.
