You can easily picture in your head a crowd of people with a list of inmates marching on various prisons and freeing the non violent offenders with one sweeping action. Does imagination lead to justice and equality? I think the alternative of attempting to create more empathy in our prison industrial complexes’ output is likely to do more, but this pessimism leaves people in deprivation. It is so hard to do something for people that are free and in need. Change that crosses the obstacles of law and architecture to free people from the devastating awfulness of old America doesn’t look possible. So imagination is our only retreat. Imagine a better world and then gather resources and make plans for it to come about. Piece by piece that’s the best available approach. The lowering of standards necessary to stay active when you have big goals is tragic. Focus on the next step and the next breath.
